Ararat Gallery holds one of the major contemporary fibre and textile collections in Australian regional galleries. Contemporary fibre and textile art have been a focus of the collection since the establishment of the gallery in the late 1960s with a revival of interest in craft practice. Artists represented in the collection include Elsje van Keppel, Sarah Crowest, Kay Lawrence, Tass Mavrogordato, Pamela Gaunt and Gerldine Burrowes. Key sub-collections include textile miniatures; The Art of the Japanese Package with an excellent selection of traditional Japanese packaging; The Lady Barbara Grimwade Costume Collection covering costume between 1956 - 1989; and The Frances Burke Collection with its screenprinted fabric lengths and samples by Australian designer Frances Burke. Ararat was founded by a large party of Chinese gold diggers in the mid 1850s and benefited from a second gold rush in the early 1900s. Many examples of fine Victorian architecture from the period can be seen through the town. The Ararat Gallery is housed in one of these buildings, the stately Town Hall. Ararat today sits at the centre of a major merino wool and wine producing district.
