Bendigo Art Gallery was founded in 1887 and is one of Australia’s largest and oldest regional art galleries. The collections of Bendigo Art Gallery include Australian Art from the 1850s to the present day; a special collection of art from the Bendigo goldfields; and 19th Century European paintings, sculptures and decorative arts. The Gallery is a blend of grand European- style rooms with polished wood floors, ornate plaster arches and cornices, diffused natural sky-lighting through rooftop lantern towers and modern spaces of glass and contemporary design.

The Gallery's Australian collection features the work of artists such as S.T.Gill, Thomas Ham, Louis Buvelot, Eugene Von Guerard, Walter Withers, Rupert Bunny, Sir William Dobell, Tom Roberts, Sir Arthur Streeton, Sir Hans Heysen, Arthur Boyd, Fred Williams, Penleigh Boyd, Grace Cossington Smith, Lloyd Rees and the sculptor C.D.Richardson. Many of the 19th Century Australian works document the history of Bendigo, once the heart of the Victorian goldfields and still an active gold mining town and burgeoning regional centre.

The European works in the collection include paintings, sculptures and decorative arts reflecting European salon trends of the mid to late 19th Century. British works in the collection include large and sentimental works such as 'Homeless' by Thomas Kennington, and 'Too Late' by Herbert Schmalz. These and other works in the collection reflect a bygone era when English and European landscapes, allegories and portraits were seen as an essential part of any worthwhile Australian art collection.

The gallery's strong collections of 20th Century paintings, sculpture, prints and drawings showcase Australia's modern art history. Artists such as Walter Withers, Rupert Bunny, Grace Cossington Smith, Rah Fizelle and Margaret Preston are among the many major 20th Century Australian painters and sculptors represented in the collection.
