| Sandhurst from Camp Hill, 1886 |
| Type: |
Oil on canvas |
| Creator: |
James Edwin Meadows |
| Date: |
1886 |
| Description: |
This work provides us with a birds eye view of Sandhurst, as Bendigo was then
known, just 30 years after settlement. Many of the landmarks are familiar to us today.
Following the main street of Pall Mall, we can see the earlier building of the Shamrock
and the former Post Office, which is now the Information Centre. During the 1880s, Bendigo
was at its height, the rich gold bearing mines enabled grand public buildings and
residences to be erected. Interestingly, Meadows never actually came to Australia. Rather,
this work was executed by referring to detailed drawings, photographs, postcards and
engravings. This painting was included in the Colonial and Indian Exhibition in London and
aimed to showcase the marvellous progress made in the Colony. |
