| Creator: |
Walter Withers |
| Date: |
1912 |
| Description: |
One of the major works executed by this artist, The Drover was executed just two years
before Walter Withers death in 1914. It captures the seasonal atmosphere of the bush
and gives the activity of droving a slightly romantic feel, showing a pride in the
Australian way of life. Like a number of other artists at the time, Withers was interested
in capturing the quality of light and the spirit of Australia in his paintings. The groups
of artists who were later referred to as the Heidelberg School were at their most prolific
between 1888 and 1901, but due to a lack of patronage at home and a desire for overseas
training and experience, many of its members were forced to Europe by 1900. Yet their
influence was to carry on, their vision of Australian life and landscape has helped to
create a national identity. |
