Girl with Cigarette was painted by Agnes Goodsir, an Australian artist who
spent most of her career overseas. Hailed as one of the great portrait painters
internationally, she received little recognition in her own country. Goodsir studied in
Bendigo under Arthur T Woodward who was said to revolutionise local teaching. He also
actively encouraged his students to study overseas. Goodsir left Australia in 1899 with
the financial support of her father, and studied in Paris for the next five years. After a
brief visit to Australia, Goodsir travelled once again, first to London, then later
returning to Paris. She was the second Australian woman to become a member of the Salon
Nationale des Beaux Arts, and she also exhibited at the Royal Academy of London. The
romantic delicacy of her paintings still entrance the eye, the artist aiming to capture
the mood of the moment especially in regards to her portraits. |
