The Castlemaine Art Gallery and Historical Museum was founded in 1913 and has an impressive collection of Australian artworks and objects from Castlemaine and the surrounding district. The Gallery is housed in a heritage-listed art deco building designed by Percy Meldrum, one of the earliest examples of modernist architecture in regional Victoria. The Gallery's permanent collection includes works by artists such as Louis Buvelot, Fred McCubbin, Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton while more contemporary works include those by Russell Drysdale, Fred Williams, John Brack, Clifton Pugh, Lloyd Rees, Margaret Preston, and Roger Kemp. In 1990 the Gallery began to collect photographs of Australian artists by Australian photographers and holds works by photographers such as Max Dupain, Olive Cotton and May Moore. An extensive reference library is available to assist art students and members of the public in research. The Gallery shop has a wide range of postcards, greeting cards, fine art reproduction prints and books for sale.
