The Geelong Gallery was established in 1896 and houses 4,000 works of art, including impressive collections of Australian Colonial painting and silver, European porcelain and ceramics and contemporary Australian painting, sculpture and ceramics. While the original facade remains intact, the Gallery has undergone several refurbishments and extensions that combine contemporary spaces with its classical 19th Century Victorian rooms.

The gallery's collection of Australian paintings includes works of the Heidelberg School, Australian impressionists and Colonial artists.

The Australian sculpture collection is made up of works from two distinct groups: 19th Century Classicism, such as Bertram Mackennal's Salome, and contemporary works by Robert Klippel, Inge King, Rosalie Gascoigne, Lenton Parr, Danila Vassilieff, Geoffrey Bartlett, Clement Meadmore and Ron Robertson-Swann.

The works on paper of the gallery date from the mid-Colonial period to more recent works. Amongst them are the complete set of Eric Thake Christmas cards, Colonial watercolours depicting the Geelong region, and prints by John Brack, George Baldessin, Roger Kemp, Charles Blackman and Colin Lancely.

Acquired during the early decades of the gallery's existence, the collection of works by British painters  represent the taste of Victoria's first art patrons and collectors. Painters of the British Royal Academy are well-represented in this section of the collection with their depictions of traditional subject matter such as rural scenes, landscapes, interiors and mythology.
