Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery (MPRG) opened in 1971 and holds one of Australia's most significant collections of works on paper. The original gallery was staffed entirely by volunteers under the directorship of art critic Alan McCulloch.

MPRG reopened in its present location in 1990, and continues to build on its collection of 1,300 Australian prints and drawings. An annual exhibition, National Works on Paper, enables MPRG to collect Australian works on paper and enlarge its substantial collection.

A second focus of the collection is significant art works relating to the surrounding Mornington Peninsula area by Australian artists. The  'Artists Retreat Series' of exhibitions developed by MPRG examine and promote the Mornington Peninsula as a source of inspiration to artists, including several well-known Australian artists who lived and worked in the  area.

One of the most famous families to live in the region was the Boyd family and the gallery holds many works by Emma Minnie, Robyn and Arthur. Arthur Boyd spent several years on the Mornington Peninsula in his youth.

The gallery has also developed a self-drive arts tour of the area, highlighting various spots that have inspired some of Australia's most well-known painters over the years. A free Arts Trail Map is available from the gallery.
