This trail begins at Hamilton in
Victoria's west, passing through the beautiful Grampians National Park to Horsham then on
through the outback to Mildura and down the Murray River to Swan Hill.
Hamilton Art Gallery |
Hamilton
is a thriving agricultural centre in the middle of a major wool-producing district. The
town is home to 130-year old Botanical Gardens and the Hamilton Art Gallery. The Hamilton
Art Gallery boasts an impressive collection of fine and decorative arts, including a
gallery of Paul Sandby's work. Paul Sandby is considered the father of English watercolour
and the gallery's collection is one of the largest in the world.
|
Horsham Art Gallery |
Situated between
the Grampians and Little Desert National Parks is the city of Horsham.
Horsham, described by author Mark Twain in the 1890s as a peaceful country town
'full of snug homes' is the centre of an active arts community and home to the Horsham Art
Galley. The gallery is renowned for its Mack Jost collection of contemporary art and is
housed in an original art deco building.
|
Mildura Arts Centre Gallery |
The trail turns
north to Mildura, an oasis in the middle of the outback. The Mildura Arts
Centre Gallery has an impressive collection of around 1,700 objects, most notably a
well-known pastel drawing by French impressionist Edgar Degas and an important collection
of sculpture from 1960 - 1980.
|
Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery |
Travel down the
Murray River to arrive in Swan Hill. The Murray River is 2,350 km long,
one of the longest navigable rivers in the world. Like Mildura, Swan Hill has benefited
hugely from the Murray River irrigation scheme which has seen many kinds of agriculture
prosper in this otherwise arid area. In recent times concerns have been raised about the
soil salinity the irrigation scheme has caused. Swan Hill is home to the Swan Hill
Regional Art Gallery with its impressive contemporary collection of paintings, prints,
drawings, and sculpture.
