Graeme Davison teaches history at Monash University where he is a Sir John Monash Distinguished Professor. He has written widely on Australian urban and social history, public history and national identity. His several books include 'The Rise and Fall of Marvellous Melbourne'(1978, new edition forthcoming 2004), 'The Unforgiving Minute: How Australia Learned to Tell the Time'(1993), 'The Use and Abuse of Australian History'(2000) and, most recently, 'Car Wars: How the Car Won our Hearts and Conquered Our Cities'(2004). He co-edited the 'Oxford Companion to Australian History'(1998). He has been an historical advisor to several museums, including Museum Victoria and the National Museum of Australia, and co-edited a volume on the history of Sydney's Powerhouse Museum.
