History
Expressions of
interest for the formation of a Special Interest Group focused on evaluation and visitor research were
first canvassed at the 1994 Museums Australia conference in
Fremantle. Further discussion followed at the Evaluation and
Visitor Research Conference held at the Powerhouse Museum in
March, 1995. Later that year, at the Museums Australia
conference in Brisbane, an interim committee was formed to
establish the EVRSIG. The following aims were identified:
-
The need to
identify evaluation and visitor research as a part of the
practice of the new museology
-
The need for a
professional forum within Museums Australia through which
developments in theory, methodology and findings can be
shared and standards of best practice established
-
The need to
recognise the role that the visitor has as a
co-collaborator in the joint interpretation of culture.
Since then, the
EVRSIG has grown to be one of the most active within Museums
Australia, conducting workshops, professional development
activities, conference sessions, and undertaking a series of
special projects to address significant
industry issues.
