On the tourists' back? The relationship between tourism and
the museum and gallery sector [PDF 222k]
Linda Ferguson, Australian War Memorial. Paper presented at Museums Australia Conference, Adelaide, 2002 Once Upon Our Times
In the 19th and 20th centuries, Australia rode to wealth 'on
the sheeps' back'; that is, the wool industry was the heart
of the Australian economy. Now, another sector is being held
up as the key to Australia's economic prosperity - tourism.
Should museums and galleries hop on the bandwagon, so to
speak, and ride 'on the tourists' back' to achieve economic
success? Or is talk of a tourism-led recovery nothing but a
myth?
The Sports Tourist - Cultural Cringe or Cultural Tourist?
[PDF 265k]
Cindy Ferguson, Melbourne Museum. Paper presented at Museums Australia Conference, Adelaide, 2002 Once Upon Our Times
Are Sports Tourism and Cultural Tourism mutually exclusive?
Or do sports fans visit cultural attractions and do cultural
tourists go to sporting events? If there is indeed an
overlap, how then is Melbourne perceived - do tourists see
Melbourne as a sports-orientated holiday destination, a
cultural holiday destination, both or neither?
The paper discusses the results of a study into interstate
and international visitors to Melbourne conducted during the
Australian Open. The research profiles visitors who do and
don't visit Melbourne Museum - who are they, where are they
from and what are they doing while they're in Melbourne.
