An aspect of Mary that her sisters found hard to accept was Mary’s growing sense of "holiness", as her sister Annie put it. Mary performed a number of church duties and she had charge of the altar and the lamp in All Saints Church.  One night she found herself locked in this was the work of a family member and there were many such tricks played on Mary by her sisters. Despite this Mary was seen by all as a young woman who was obviously most happy in her faith and loving to all around her.

The 'Seminary for Young Ladies' which Mary set up allowed older girls to live with the MacKillop family whilst receiving further education. Mary taught these young ladies after her own school classes and her two sisters, Maggie and Lexie, acted as supervisors.
