| History of
the Lake Macquarie Heritage Centre |
On 10th October 1889, the Toronto Tramway Act was assented to for the
construction of a steam tramway for the carrying of passengers. The line was operated by
the Toronto Hotel and Tramway Co. and was opened on 2nd August 1891. The first
train consisted of a pannier tank engine and a fifty-seat passenger car.In March 1896 the affectionately known 'Coffee Pot' was purchased and
used on the line with the original engine used as a spare. The train was also used to take
fish to the main line at Fassifern to sell at the Newcastle and Sydney markets.
The train was used by picnic parties, with over 100 000
people using the train between 1900 and 1910. The line closed on the 11th March
1990 and in April 1992 the Society officially took over the Railway Station to house their
collection.

| Objectives of the Museum |
The Society was formed on 13th November 1962 to research the early pioneers of the
district. The aim of the Society today is to collect, protect and promote the history and

extensive range of photographs that can be seen during opening hours or at other times by

progressive development of the area.
The Society meets monthly, and has formed a Special Projects
Research Group to develop future displays for public viewing. Enquiries about the history
of the Lake Macquarie area are always welcome. Any information supplied to us is greatly
appreciated as well.
If you have any anecdotes, historical memorabilia or
photographs that you would like to share with the Society, please contact us. We would be
