Jane Turner Illustrator Profile

Jane worked for three years before returning to study. After completing her Associate Diploma of Fine Art: Painting and Printmaking and a Diploma of Education, she taught in various secondary and technical schools before taking up illustrating full time in 1979.Her first job was providing illustrations for educational publications, the Nelson Young Australia reading scheme in particular.

Jane loves drawing from nature and studying human and animal subjects, and sees herself as a visual story-teller. She has had numerous shortlistings for the books she has illustrated, including the Kate Greenaway Award in the UK. In 1989 she was joint winner of the Picture Book of the Year Award for Drac and the Gremlin by Allan Baillie. (The Dromkeen Book of Australian Children’s Illustrators)

Jane has always been fascinated by the changes in mood created by the play of light in a particular place and time - her earliest memories are full of bright sunlight and long shadows. Her coloured pencil illustrations are made rich and vibrant through her understanding of light and her ability to bring characters to life so that you can feel the emotion of the scene on the page.
